Tragedy struck at the General Hospital Gboko, Benue State, where a fire outbreak claimed the lives of two children, a boy and a girl, aged 2 and 4 years.
According to eyewitnesses and hospital sources, the incident occurred on Tuesday evening, October 27, 2026 when the parents, who are staying at the hospital quarters, locked the two children inside a room and stepped out briefly.
It was during that short absence that fire started from inside the room.
A hospital staff said they noticed smoke coming from the room and quickly raised an alarm.
Before staff could force the door open and reach the children, the fire had already gone out of control and engulfed the room.
Members of the hospital community and the host community gathered and made frantic efforts to put out the fire and rescue the children, but all efforts proved abortive. The children were burnt beyond recognition.
One of the occupants of the building, Godwin Aondohemba, who who confirmed the incident said the fire destroyed all the properties in the building. "Father Lord u said in any situations we find ourselves we should tank u this evening we lost two kids and all the properties in this apartment," he wrote. "1 my neighbor lost his two kids. 2 I lost all my properties nothing was removed. Pls pray for us, I am not around I went to work all this happened in my absence I lack words on this. Almighty God only u will help me out on this."View this post on Instagram
