Shehu Sani identifies key reasons behind assassinations of Northern clerics
Former Senator Shehu Sani highlights three main factors contributing to the killings of clerics in Northern Nigeria.

Shehu Sani, a former lawmaker who represented Kaduna Central, has shed light on the troubling trend of assassinations targeting prominent clerics in Northern Nigeria. In a recent post on his verified X handle, Sani outlined three significant factors that he believes have led to the deaths of these religious leaders over the past fifteen years.
According to Sani, the clerics who have been murdered share commonalities that put them at risk. Firstly, he noted that many of these individuals have been vocal against extremism. Their willingness to speak out against radical ideologies has made them targets for terrorist groups seeking to maintain control through fear and intimidation.
Secondly, Sani highlighted the clerics' advocacy for inter-religious tolerance and peace. In a region often marred by sectarian violence, their efforts to promote harmony among different faiths have likely angered extremist factions that thrive on division and conflict.
Lastly, Sani pointed out that some of these clerics have mentioned the names of terror leaders or groups in their sermons, directly challenging the authority and influence of these organizations. This act of bravery, while noble, has proven fatal for many, as it exposes them to retaliation from those they oppose.
Reflecting on the broader implications of these assassinations, Sani recounted a personal experience from 2011 when he and former President Olusegun Obasanjo traveled to Maiduguri to initiate a peace dialogue. Following their efforts, the facilitator of that dialogue was killed, and both men received threats, underscoring the dangers faced by those who dare to confront terrorism.
Sani emphasized the chilling message from the terrorists: "All the prominent clerics that have been assassinated in the North in the last fifteen years were killed for speaking out against terrorism. The terrorists want silence, or they will silence," he remarked. This statement reflects the grim reality faced by many in the region, where the price of advocating for peace and justice can be a death sentence.
The ongoing violence against clerics raises urgent questions about the safety of religious leaders in Northern Nigeria and the need for greater protection and support for those who stand against extremism. As the cycle of violence continues, the call for inter-religious dialogue and peace becomes increasingly vital to counter the narratives of terror and foster a more united society.
