A tragic assault on the Binnari community in Taraba State's Karim-Lamido Local Government Area left at least 58 people dead on Friday, October 23. The attack occurred during the community's weekly market, a gathering that draws numerous residents for trade and social interaction.

The Taraba State Police Command confirmed the death toll, which includes 15 individuals who drowned while attempting to flee the violence in an overloaded canoe that capsized in a nearby river. Eyewitnesses reported that the gunmen, armed and riding motorcycles, carried out the assault for several hours, looting shops, burning homes, and terrorizing residents.

Local sources indicated that the attackers struck shortly after Friday congregational prayers, catching many by surprise. The violence escalated as the gunmen opened fire indiscriminately, leading to chaos and panic among the market-goers. Community leader Abubakar Saifullahi described the scene as devastating, stating that the assailants seized cash, food supplies, and motorcycles left behind by fleeing residents.

In the aftermath, search teams recovered additional bodies from the surrounding bushes and the river, as reported by police spokesperson Victor Mshelizah. The initial death toll was reported to be only 10, but as the situation unfolded, community accounts suggested that the number could be as high as 50 before the official count was confirmed.

Residents have expressed deep frustration over the lack of timely security response. A trader, who identified himself only as Adamu, lamented that the gunmen faced no resistance for hours, questioning the effectiveness of local governance and security measures. He stated, "We have no government in place," highlighting the prolonged nature of the assault and the significant destruction of market goods.

Yimita Sunday, a member of the Youth Security Volunteers Vanguard in Karim-Lamido, noted that poor road conditions and unreliable telecommunications hampered efforts to alert security agencies during the attack. It was only after local hunters and vigilantes pursued the attackers into the nearby forests that security personnel were finally able to respond.

Following the incident, police announced increased deployments to the area to enhance security. However, as of the latest reports, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and the full details of the security agencies' response during the assault have not been disclosed.

This incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of isolated communities in Taraba, particularly during vulnerable times such as market days. The attack underscores the ongoing security challenges faced by residents in the region, leaving many to question the adequacy of protection against such violent incursions.
