In a significant move ahead of Nigeria's 2027 general elections, the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has announced a nationwide prayer and fasting initiative. The program, themed ‘Let Justice and Peace Flow’, draws inspiration from the biblical verse Amos 5:24 and seeks to foster an environment conducive to free, fair, and credible elections.

The announcement was made in Abuja by the CBCN President, Archbishop Matthew Ndagoso, alongside Secretary Bishop Peter Odetoyinbo. They emphasized the importance of this spiritual exercise in light of the recurring issues of electoral violence, vote-buying, and deepening ethno-religious divisions that have plagued past elections in Nigeria.

The bishops have called on dioceses, parishes, church societies, prayer groups, families, and individuals to actively engage in this program, which aims to invoke divine guidance for electoral officials and security personnel. The initiative also encourages citizens to vote responsibly and to actively oppose electoral malpractice and violence.

As part of the program, all parishes are set to observe two specific days of prayer and fasting: October 31 and November 28. Activities planned for these days include fasting, Rosary processions, Holy Mass, and the recitation of a special prayer for the 2027 elections, crafted by the CBCN.

Additionally, December 8 has been designated as a nationwide diocesan day of prayer, coinciding with the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The day will begin with a Holy Mass at 3 p.m., led by the diocesan bishop, who will read a pastoral letter titled “2027 Elections: Call to Responsible Choice and Action.” Following the Mass, a Rosary procession to the cathedral is scheduled for 4:30 p.m., culminating in an Eucharistic Benediction.

The bishops have also declared January 15, 2027, as a nationwide parish day of prayer and fasting, occurring just before the general elections. They urged Nigerians to reject tribalism, corruption, bribery, and voter apathy, while promoting peaceful voting practices and the protection of votes.

In their statement, the bishops reiterated the need for a credible electoral process that is devoid of rancour and bloodshed, underscoring the role of faith in achieving a just and peaceful electoral outcome in the upcoming elections.
