Bayelsa imposes 24-hour curfew after protests escalate in Biseni community
The Bayelsa State Government has declared a curfew in Biseni following violent protests.

The Bayelsa State Government has enacted a 24-hour curfew in the Biseni community of Yenagoa Local Government Area after protests turned violent, resulting in the destruction of properties belonging to traditional chiefs. Governor Douye Diri announced the curfew on October 9, citing a breakdown of law and order as the primary reason for the decision.
In a statement released by his press secretary, Daniel Alabrah, the governor indicated that the curfew was implemented following briefings from security commanders regarding the situation on the ground, which included road blockades and bonfires set by protesters. Diri urged residents to adhere to the curfew and assured them that the government would take necessary actions to safeguard lives and property.
The unrest in Biseni reportedly stemmed from frustrations among the youth over a lack of essential services, including electricity and well-maintained roads. Protesters expressed their grievances, demanding that the oil-producing company operating in the area take responsibility for improving local infrastructure. Tensions escalated further when one protester was allegedly arrested for supposedly inciting others to block access to the company’s road.
In response to the unrest, a meeting was convened between the youths and representatives from various community groups, during which assurances were made that their demands would be taken into consideration. However, the situation remains tense as the community grapples with the aftermath of the protests and the newly imposed curfew.
Governor Diri's administration is now facing the challenge of restoring peace while addressing the underlying issues that sparked the protests. The government's swift action reflects an urgent need to maintain order in the region and to respond to the citizens' calls for better living conditions.
