CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso Signs MoU in Singapore to Boost Financial Ties
During a recent visit to Singapore, CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso signed a key MoU aimed at enhancing Nigeria's financial connectivity with Asia.

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, has embarked on a significant diplomatic mission in Singapore to enhance Nigeria's financial ties with Asia. This visit included high-level discussions with the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) and culminated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Global Finance & Technology Network (GFTN).
The CBN's initiative is part of a broader strategy to foster institutional cooperation and develop financial markets, thereby positioning Nigeria as a key player in the Asian financial landscape. The engagements reflect the CBN's commitment to translating Nigeria's financial sector reforms into tangible international partnerships and innovative channels for investment and trade.
In conversations with MAS, the CBN delegation focused on various aspects of financial sector development, including regulation and market connectivity. The talks aimed to identify areas for ongoing collaboration, emphasizing the importance of innovation in the financial space.
The MoU signed with GFTN establishes a framework for cooperation on financial innovation, which is expected to connect relevant institutions and innovation ecosystems between Nigeria and Singapore. This partnership is anticipated to unlock practical opportunities for collaboration that could benefit both nations.
At the Nigeria–Asia Financial Connectivity Dialogue, which was organized in collaboration with J.P. Morgan, the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX), and FMDQ Group, Cardoso articulated Nigeria's vision for creating deeper and more liquid financial markets. He underscored the significance of recent reforms aimed at enhancing transparency and confidence in the foreign exchange market.
"The real test of reform is not whether you can attract capital once; it is whether you create the confidence for capital to stay, return and grow," Cardoso stated, highlighting the need for credible monetary policy and stronger governance.
Cardoso further noted that the stabilization of Nigeria's financial markets is not merely an end goal but a foundational step towards attracting long-term institutional capital and improving market infrastructure. He expressed optimism about building durable relationships between Nigerian and Asian financial institutions, which could lead to more efficient payment and settlement channels.
The CBN Governor's visit underscores Nigeria's proactive approach to engaging with Asian markets, aiming not just to attract investment flows but to cultivate lasting partnerships that benefit both regions. This initiative is expected to enhance the participation of Nigerians in the Asian financial markets, fostering a more interconnected global financial ecosystem.
