The cost of refilling a 12.5kg cooking gas cylinder has surged in Nigeria, with prices now ranging from approximately ₦15,000 to over ₦20,000 in various regions. Major cities such as Lagos, Abuja, and Rivers are experiencing some of the highest rates, while areas in Ogun and certain parts of Lagos offer comparatively lower prices.

Recent market surveys indicate that the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) has climbed significantly, influenced by factors such as local supply conditions, transportation costs, and the pricing strategies of retailers. For instance, in Lagos, some outlets are charging around ₦1,600 per kilogram, translating to a refill cost of about ₦20,000 for a 12.5kg cylinder. Meanwhile, in the Federal Capital Territory, prices vary considerably, with high-end locations charging as much as ₦1,650 per kilogram, resulting in a refill cost of approximately ₦20,625.

The price disparities are stark, as households in different neighborhoods can spend thousands of naira more for the same quantity of gas. For example, in lower-end areas of Abuja, consumers can find prices as low as ₦1,250 per kilogram, leading to a refill cost of ₦15,625. Similarly, in Ogun State's Shagamu, the price is around ₦1,200 per kilogram, allowing consumers to refill their cylinders for ₦15,000.

The national average retail price for a 12.5kg refill reached approximately ₦17,616.94 in September 2026, reflecting the ongoing pressures on Nigerian households from rising energy and transportation costs. The fluctuations in LPG prices are attributed to several factors, including supply chain challenges and international market volatility.

In addition to the retail prices, the costs at gas depots also play a crucial role in determining what consumers ultimately pay. Recent data shows depot prices ranging from ₦990 to ₦1,150 per kilogram, depending on the supplier. This variation in depot pricing, combined with the costs of transportation and distribution, results in significant differences in retail prices across the country.

As the cost of living continues to rise, consumers are advised to shop around and compare prices from different retailers before refilling their cooking gas cylinders. This strategy could help households identify the most economical options available, especially as LPG prices remain volatile in the current economic climate.
