Tragic Ondo crash claims lives of three Nigerian Air Force officers
A recent ATR-42 crash in Ondo State has resulted in the deaths of three Nigerian Air Force officers, including a newlywed pilot.

A devastating aircraft crash in Igbokoda, Ondo State, has claimed the lives of three officers from the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), stirring grief within the military community and beyond. The incident occurred on October 5, 2026, when an ATR-42 aircraft, en route from Benin to Lagos, lost radio contact and subsequently crashed near a Naval Base.
Among the deceased is Flying Officer IM Adeshina, who was commissioned into the NAF just nine days prior to the tragedy. Adeshina, celebrated for his outstanding performance as the best cadet of Branch Commission Course 3, was honored during his commissioning ceremony by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen. Tragically, he lost his life shortly after beginning his promising career.
Also among the victims is Squadron Leader Ahamefule Man-Ugwueje, who had recently celebrated his marriage to Flight Lieutenant Damilola Adekunle on September 19, 2026. Their wedding took place at the Redeemed Christian Church of God in Abuja, followed by a reception at the Nigerian Army Conference Centre. Just sixteen days after their joyous occasion, Man-Ugwueje's life was cut short in the crash, leaving his widow, who is also a serving NAF officer, to mourn his loss.
Flight Lieutenant IS Bako, who served as the co-pilot on the ill-fated flight, also perished in the crash. Bako had recently been promoted to flight lieutenant in September 2025 after joining the Nigerian Defence Academy in 2015. His colleagues remembered him as a dedicated officer who had made significant contributions to the NAF.
The crash, which involved a total of 32 individuals, including 25 passengers and 7 crew members, has prompted an outpouring of tributes across social media. Fellow officers and friends have described the loss of these three men as heartbreaking, highlighting their dedication and the impact they had on their colleagues and families.
In response to the tragedy, President Bola Tinubu has declared a three-day mourning period for the victims. He extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and the entire military community, acknowledging the profound loss felt by all.
As search and rescue operations continue, the Nigerian Air Force and the families of the victims face the challenging task of coming to terms with this tragic event, which has not only claimed lives but also cut short the potential of these promising officers in their prime.
