Edo State lecturer dies in hotel after meeting with sex worker
Dr. Matthew Uwuigbe of Ambrose Alli University passed away following an encounter with a sex worker.

A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University in Edo State, Dr. Matthew Uwuigbe, has tragically died after an alleged sexual encounter with a 21-year-old commercial sex worker named Angela Defa Jacob. The incident occurred on Sunday in a hotel located in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, within the Esan West Local Government Area.
Reports indicate that Dr. Uwuigbe checked into the hotel with Jacob and subsequently collapsed shortly after their encounter. According to the Edo State Police Command, the lecturer had asked Jacob to fetch water for him, and upon her return, she discovered him unresponsive in the room.
Eno Ikoedem, the spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, confirmed that three individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident. These include the hotel owner, the manager, and the sex worker. The police are currently conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Dr. Uwuigbe's death. Ikoedem stated, "On October 5, 2026, at about 8 pm, the command received a report that Matthew Uwuigbe, a lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, had lodged at a hotel in Ekpoma and engaged the services of a 21-year-old sex worker, Angela Defa Jacob."
The lecturer's body has been taken to the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary for further examination. In response to the incident, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, the Public Relations Officer of Ambrose Alli University, confirmed Dr. Uwuigbe's affiliation with the institution. However, he emphasized that the incident took place outside of the university's jurisdiction. "We are not denying that he is our staff, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life. The girl in question is not our student, and everything happened outside our institution," Aladenika stated.
The shocking nature of this incident has raised concerns within the academic community and beyond, prompting discussions about the implications of such personal encounters for public figures. As investigations continue, the university and local authorities are expected to provide further updates on the case.
