Cristiano Ronaldo has publicly accepted responsibility for his recent departure from the Portugal national team’s camp, stating he deserves to face consequences for his actions. The 41-year-old forward walked out after being an unused substitute in a Nations League match against Norway and learning he would not start in the subsequent game against Denmark.

In a detailed statement, Ronaldo expressed remorse for leaving the camp but emphasized his commitment to continue representing Portugal. He stated, "The Portuguese Football Federation must assess the consequences of my actions and punish me for them. I believe the punishment should not be reduced."

The controversy arose from a disagreement between Ronaldo and Portugal's head coach, Jorge Jesus. According to Ronaldo, there was an initial agreement that allowed him to rest during the matches against Norway and Denmark as part of a fitness management plan. However, he claimed that Jesus later informed him he would play for 30 minutes against Norway, a promise that did not materialize as he remained on the bench throughout the match.

Ronaldo recounted, "Everyone knows the rest. I warmed up from half-time onwards, watched the minutes tick by and wasn't called on. The manager had broken his word to me." He further explained that a meeting with Jesus was supposed to clarify their understanding, but he felt the coach's subsequent comments in a press conference misrepresented their discussion.

Despite the fallout, Ronaldo took a conciliatory approach when addressing his teammates and supporters, apologizing for his abrupt departure. He stated, "I owe an apology to my national team teammates for having left the camp... I apologise to the Portuguese people once again, but a broken word has, for me, a defining impact."

Looking ahead, Ronaldo made it clear that he intends to continue his international career, provided he remains fit and maintains his performance level with his club, Al-Nassr. He affirmed, "After my suspension period ends, I will be available, as I always have been, to compete and win with our national team."

Ronaldo holds the record for the most goals scored for Portugal, with 146 goals in 234 appearances, and has played a pivotal role in the nation's football history, including winning the UEFA Euro 2016 and the Nations League twice. Although he had previously contemplated retirement from international football after the upcoming 2026 World Cup, he revealed that Portugal Football Federation president Pedro Proença encouraged him to reconsider his decision, leading to his current resolve to continue playing.
