Kelechi Iheanacho expresses joy in returning to Super Eagles for Russia friendly
Striker Kelechi Iheanacho shares his excitement about rejoining the Super Eagles after 16 months away.

Nigerian striker Kelechi Iheanacho has expressed his enthusiasm for returning to the national team, stating that his love for football and his country motivated his comeback to the Super Eagles. Iheanacho, who plays for Bursaspor, was recalled to the squad for a friendly match against Russia, marking his first appearance for Nigeria in over 16 months. His last game for the national team was during the 2025 Unity Cup final against Jamaica on May 31, 2025.
In an interview with the Super Eagles media team, Iheanacho emphasized that his decision to return to the national team was not influenced by external pressures but stemmed from his deep passion for the game. "I have been in the Super Eagles, even in the national team in general, for a long time, starting from the U-13 to U-15 to U-17 and all the rest of them, to the Super Eagles," he stated.
He further elaborated on his commitment, saying, "It is because of the love and passion I have for the game. It is the dream of everyone to play for the Super Eagles as long as you are Nigerian." Iheanacho also mentioned that he would gladly participate in any capacity, even expressing willingness to join lower age categories if called upon.
"Even if it is five-a-side Eagles are playing, or I am invited to the U-15s, I will play because of my passion. I do not care what anybody says. As long as the coach gives me a call-up, I will play," he added, highlighting his dedication to the national team.
The striker's return comes after a stellar start to the 2026/27 season, where he has netted 11 goals and provided two assists in just nine appearances for Bursaspor, a club he joined as a free agent following the expiration of his contract with Celtic. Despite the perception that the Turkish second tier may be an easier league, Iheanacho defended its competitiveness, stating, "It is a good league, to be fair. I do not know how people rate the league, but it is a really good league, and it is not as easy as people think. When you play there, you will know whether it is easy or not."
Iheanacho's experience on the international stage is notable, having played four matches for the Super Eagles in Russia, with his standout performance occurring in November 2017 when he scored and assisted in a 4-2 victory over Argentina. As he prepares for the upcoming friendly, Iheanacho's excitement and commitment to the Super Eagles are clear, promising a spirited display on the pitch.
