Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has officially announced a work-free day for teachers in the state on Monday, October 5, 2026, to celebrate World Teachers' Day. This declaration, made public on October 2, acknowledges the vital role educators play in the development of human capital in Kwara State.

The announcement was communicated through a statement by Mashood Abdulrafiu Agboola, the deputy chief press secretary at the Government House in Ilorin. In his message, Governor AbdulRazaq expressed gratitude towards teachers for their unwavering dedication and resilience in fostering educational growth within the state.

"His Excellency extends his best wishes to teachers across the length and breadth of the state whose contributions to human capital development is acknowledged at all times. He thanks our teachers for their efforts and resilience," the statement read.

The governor reiterated his administration's commitment to the welfare of teachers and the broader community in Kwara. He assured educators of continued support and recognition for their invaluable contributions to society.

World Teachers' Day, celebrated annually on October 5, was established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in 1994. It serves as a global occasion to honour the significant impact teachers have on shaping future generations.

As a result of the governor's proclamation, teachers in Kwara State will not be required to attend school on this day, allowing them to reflect on their contributions and the importance of their profession. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance the status of educators and recognize their hard work.

In related news, six Nigerian teachers were recently awarded $1,000 each at the 2026 Summer Fellowship for Innovative Teachers Award (SFIT) conference, which took place in Abuja. This event, co-organized by the Murdock-Thompson Centre for Teachers and the Intellectual Giants in Africa Foundation, celebrated innovative teaching practices and aimed to restore dignity to the teaching profession.

As Kwara prepares to honour its educators, the governor's declaration not only highlights the importance of teachers but also reinforces the commitment to improving the education sector in the state.
