A tragic incident occurred in Lagos on Tuesday when Inspector Mercy Bassey, a female police officer, was killed by a hit-and-run driver while performing route-lining duties for President Bola Tinubu's arrival. The accident took place on the Third Mainland Bridge at the Adekunle Intersection, as Bassey was crossing the road around 2:30 PM.

Reports indicate that Bassey was struck by a black Highlander Sport Utility Vehicle. Eyewitnesses noted that the vehicle did not stop after the collision and sped away from the scene. Despite efforts from patrol officers who were nearby, the driver managed to escape and has yet to be identified. The registration number of the vehicle remains unknown, complicating the investigation.

Following the accident, Bassey was rushed to the General Hospital in Ebute Metta for emergency treatment. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries while awaiting medical assistance. Her body has been transferred to a morgue in Yaba for preservation.

In light of the incident, police officials are actively seeking CCTV footage from the area to help identify the vehicle involved and locate the driver. The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the incident but has withheld further comments, with spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi stating, "We don’t want to comment on the matter at the moment."

This incident occurred during a time of heightened security in Lagos, as law enforcement agencies had deployed additional personnel for the President's movement in the city. President Tinubu had returned to Nigeria on Tuesday after a vacation in France and the United Kingdom, landing at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport at 6:22 PM.

The death of Inspector Bassey has raised concerns about road safety and the need for accountability in such tragic incidents. As investigations continue, the police are urging anyone with information regarding the hit-and-run to come forward to assist in bringing the responsible party to justice.
