Kano Governor meets with key figures amid Emirate tensions and procession ban
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf convenes meeting with Rurum and Dan’agundi as disputes escalate.

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf recently held a significant closed-door meeting with prominent political figures, Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, a member of the House of Representatives, and Baffa Babba Dan’agundi, Director-General of the National Productivity Centre. This meeting, which took place on Wednesday night at the Kano State Government House, lasted nearly two hours and has drawn attention due to the ongoing tensions surrounding the Kano Emirate.
The discussions come in the wake of the state government's recent ban on Durbar processions and horse-riding activities in the Kano metropolis. This decision was made following an emergency meeting of the State Security Council, which expressed concerns about the potential for clashes and unrest during large gatherings. Security agencies have been instructed to enforce this ban strictly, with warnings issued against any violations.
Sources indicate that Rurum and Dan’agundi arrived at the Government House around 10:30 p.m. and went directly to meet with Governor Yusuf. Although the specific topics of discussion remain unconfirmed, the meeting is seen as crucial given the current political climate in Kano. After the meeting, Governor Yusuf was observed escorting both men out of the Government House, engaging with them in a friendly manner.
When approached for comments, Rurum did not explicitly confirm or deny the meeting, instead questioning, “Is it a crime for me to meet with my friend, my brother and my political leader?” Dan’agundi also refrained from disclosing details, referring to the meeting as a “family affair.” This vagueness has only heightened interest in the meeting's outcomes.
Adding to the complexity of the situation, reports have emerged that Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II was seen riding a horse despite the government's restrictions. The implications of this incident on the ongoing disputes within the emirate remain unclear, as no official response has been provided yet.
In a related development, Alhaji Aminu Babba Dan’agundi, who serves as Sarkin Dawaki Babba and Senior Counsellor to the current Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, revealed that supporters of the Bayero camp are awaiting the emir's return before planning a horse-riding procession. The emir is currently away for official duties and is expected back soon. Dan’agundi stated that further arrangements would be made public after discussions with Emir Bayero, particularly regarding a potential procession to Yakasai for a Qur’anic graduation ceremony.
The ongoing tensions within the Kano Emirate and the government's restrictions on traditional activities have sparked widespread interest and concern among residents, as the political landscape continues to evolve amid these developments.
