The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has expressed deep concern regarding the increasing incidents of data breaches and the misuse of personal information belonging to Nigerians. During a press briefing held in Dutse, Jigawa State, CITAD's dComms Project Lead, Buhari Abba, highlighted the urgent need for stronger protections of citizens' digital rights and online privacy.

Abba pointed out that as Nigeria's digital economy continues to grow, so does the risk of sensitive personal data being compromised. He noted that unauthorized access to information such as National Identification Numbers, Bank Verification Numbers, and other personal records is becoming alarmingly common. This exposure can occur through various channels including financial institutions, online merchants, government agencies, and malicious actors.

The briefing underscored the significant influence of major technology companies in the digital landscape, which Abba described as creating a scenario where users have limited control over their personal data. He emphasized that platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and X have become dominant forces, acting as gatekeepers of information and digital interactions. Their data-driven business models, coupled with opaque algorithms, raise serious concerns about privacy, consumer protection, and freedom of expression.

CITAD is advocating for greater awareness among Nigerians regarding their digital rights and is promoting the dComms platform as a viable alternative to mainstream social media. This decentralized and privacy-focused platform aims to empower users by providing them with more control over their data and online interactions. Abba explained that unlike traditional platforms where a single entity manages user data, dComms fosters community control and privacy.

Abba further elaborated that dComms is integrated into the broader Fediverse, allowing for interaction among decentralized platforms while minimizing reliance on any single technology company. He stated that CITAD's initiatives are not merely about introducing another social media option but are part of a larger effort to enhance the choices available to Nigerians in the digital space.

The organization has been actively promoting digital rights awareness through outreach efforts in universities, colleges, and polytechnics across several states, including Kano, Kaduna, Jigawa, and Bauchi. Additionally, CITAD has been sustaining public awareness through radio programs focused on digital rights and responsible technology use.
