The Cross River State Police Command has detained a 22-year-old security guard in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a five-year-old student at a nursery and primary school in Calabar. The incident, reported to the police on September 28, has raised significant concern regarding child safety in educational environments.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, the school proprietress alerted the authorities after witnessing suspicious behavior. The suspect was reportedly seen leading the young pupil to an uncompleted building adjacent to the school, where the alleged assault took place. Following the report, police swiftly took action, apprehending the suspect who is now in custody.

Eitokpah emphasized the seriousness of the case, particularly given the victim's age, and reaffirmed the police's commitment to safeguarding children from abuse and exploitation. He stated that the suspect would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a more thorough investigation as part of the ongoing inquiry.
