The Benue State Government is taking steps to formally recognize public relations as a career structure within its civil service. This initiative aims to enhance the management of government communication and improve public engagement.

Tersoo Kula, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Hyacinth Alia, made this announcement during a meeting with the leadership of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) in Makurdi. The discussions followed a recent workshop organized by the Federal Ministry of Information and NIPR, which focused on the roles of government spokespersons. Kula noted that Governor Alia is supportive of this proposal and is keen on implementing it in the state.

The proposed formalization of public relations is seen as a significant step towards strengthening professional communication within the government. According to Kula, this move will enhance public enlightenment, improve crisis communication, and address issues related to misinformation and disinformation. He emphasized the importance of continuous professional development for government spokespersons and information officers, stating that regular training would help mitigate misunderstandings and misrepresentations of government policies.

Kula also expressed the administration's willingness to collaborate with NIPR on various initiatives aimed at developing the state. He highlighted plans to support NIPR members in attending the upcoming World Public Relations Forum in Abuja in November. Furthermore, he pledged to assist the chapter in securing a permanent office space in Benue.

The NIPR chapter, led by its chairman Philip Toryue, has over 100 members working across various sectors, including government ministries, media, and academia. Toryue pointed out several challenges faced by the institute, including the need for professional recognition, combating quackery, and securing funding for capacity-building programs. He urged the government to enforce the provisions of the NIPR Act, ensuring that public relations and communication positions within government institutions are filled by certified practitioners.

In addition to advocating for professional recognition, Toryue proposed the establishment of quarterly masterclasses for government spokespersons and media aides. These sessions would focus on crucial areas such as crisis communication, media relations, and government image management. He also expressed the institute's interest in being formally involved as a technical partner in government communication campaigns, particularly those addressing security, public health, and community sensitization.

As part of its preparations for the upcoming 2027 elections, the NIPR chapter is planning a manifesto program to allow the government to address misinformation about its activities. Kula confirmed that the administration is open to public scrutiny and is committed to transparency in its endeavors.

The meeting concluded with Toryue commending Kula for his appointment as Chief Press Secretary and encouraging him to strengthen the relationship between the government and the NIPR. He emphasized the mutual benefits of collaboration, stating, "When you succeed, NIPR succeeds, and when NIPR succeeds, Benue State’s image succeeds."
