The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has confirmed that parts of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, are currently experiencing power outages due to a labour dispute at the Afam IV Power Station. The disruption began on Monday, September 28, 2026, when members of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) from the Rivers State Chapter took action that affected the Afam–Alaoji 330kV Transmission Line 2 at the Alaoji 330kV Transmission Substation.

TCN explained that the labour-related incident led to the tripping of the 150MVA 330/132kV inter-bus transformer at Afam IV. This incident has significantly impacted the bulk electricity transmission to various parts of Port Harcourt and its surrounding areas. The affected facilities include the Port Harcourt Town 132kV Transmission Substation, Elelenwo 132kV Transmission Substation, and the 60MVA 132/33kV transformer at the Port Harcourt Mains 132kV Transmission Substation.

In light of the situation, TCN is actively engaging with relevant stakeholders, including the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), to facilitate the restoration of power as soon as it is safe to do so. The company has expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to electricity consumers in the affected regions and has committed to providing ongoing updates as the situation evolves.

The ongoing dispute between NUEE and the management of Afam IV Gas Power Station highlights the challenges faced within the electricity sector in Nigeria, where labour issues can have immediate and widespread effects on power supply. Residents and businesses in Port Harcourt are advised to prepare for continued disruptions until the situation is resolved and power restoration efforts are successfully implemented.
