The United States has taken a significant step by revoking visas for a number of judges, prosecutors, lawmakers, and businessmen in four South American countries that are aligned with former President Donald Trump. This move, announced by the US State Department, is part of a broader policy aimed at combating corruption and narcotrafficking in the region.

The countries affected by this decision include Ecuador, Bolivia, Peru, and Colombia, all of which have recently seen the election of right-wing leaders. These nations are also participants in Trump's Shield of the Americas initiative, designed to tackle drug cartels and enhance security in Latin America.

According to State Department spokesman Tommy Piggott, the visa restrictions apply not only to the individuals directly involved but also to their immediate family members. This policy targets foreign nationals who are believed to undermine democratically-elected governments through corrupt practices or involvement in narcotrafficking activities.

Among those whose visas have been revoked are 12 individuals from Bolivia, two from Colombia, two from Ecuador, and one from Peru. The list from Bolivia includes several senior prosecutors and a judge known for investigating anti-corruption and violence against women, as well as a police colonel. Additionally, nine Bolivians who did not previously hold US visas have been deemed generally ineligible for future visas.

The announcement also highlighted that Bolivia's current attorney general, Roger Mariaca, has been placed on a blacklist due to allegations of significant corruption. Mariaca, who was elected in 2024, is accused of soliciting and accepting bribes to facilitate narcotrafficking and aiding violent criminals in evading justice. This designation renders him and his immediate family ineligible for entry into the United States.

Since his return to power, Trump has been focused on reasserting US influence in Latin America while intensifying efforts to combat drug trafficking through a controversial military campaign. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, known for his criticism of leftist governments in the region, has been instrumental in driving this initiative forward.

This visa revocation marks a notable escalation in the US's diplomatic stance towards its southern neighbors, reflecting a commitment to uphold democratic values and combat corruption in the region.
