During a recent dinner held in his honor at Efunyela Hall in Ikenne-Remo, Ogun State, Most Rev. Dr. Henry Ndukuba, the Primate of the Church of Nigeria, paid tribute to the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, describing him as a leader who dedicated his life to serving others. Ndukuba emphasized that Awolowo's legacy serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of selflessness and responsible leadership in Nigeria today.

Ndukuba highlighted that Awolowo's life exemplified the essence of true leadership, which is rooted in serving humanity rather than pursuing personal interests. He urged contemporary leaders to draw inspiration from Awolowo's example, stating, "Awolowo was a man that lived for others."

Reflecting on his visit to Awolowo’s residence, Ndukuba noted the significance of the chapel located there, which Awolowo used as a place for spiritual reflection and guidance. He pointed out that this aspect of Awolowo's life underscores the necessity for leaders to maintain a strong spiritual and moral foundation in their roles. "Look at his room. Look at his chapel, which meant that he wouldn’t go down these steps without coming here," he remarked, stressing the importance of seeking divine wisdom before engaging with the public.

The Primate drew parallels between Awolowo's leadership style and the teachings of Jesus Christ, who emphasized service over self-interest. He stated, "Jesus came not to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many," reinforcing the idea that impactful leadership requires sacrifice.

Ndukuba further challenged current leaders to reflect on their own commitment to service, urging them to prioritize the needs of the people they serve. He said, "None of us lives to himself or to herself and no one dies to himself. If we live, we live to the Lord and if we die, we die to the Lord."

In his remarks, Ndukuba called for a renewed focus on legacy, encouraging leaders to strive for contributions that would benefit society long after they are gone. He expressed hope that Awolowo's life would inspire a new generation of leaders to serve faithfully and make a lasting impact. "The memory of the righteous shall be blessed," he concluded, emphasizing the enduring importance of service and sacrifice in leadership.
