US targets VTB Bank for aiding Iran in evading sanctions
The US Treasury has sanctioned VTB Bank for facilitating Iranian sanctions evasion.

The United States has officially designated VTB Bank, a prominent Russian financial institution, for its role in assisting Iran to evade international sanctions. This action was announced by the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), which highlighted VTB Bank's establishment of offices in Iran and its connections with Iranian financial entities that are already under sanction.
According to the U.S. government, VTB Bank has been instrumental in transferring billions of dollars in assets, thereby undermining efforts to restrict Iran's financial activities. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized the commitment of the U.S. to continue targeting individuals and institutions that provide material, technological, or financial support to Iran, which is accused of sustaining its terrorist operations.
Bessent stated, "Treasury will not tolerate any support to the regime and will continue to identify, expose, and isolate Iran’s enablers," reinforcing the U.S. stance against entities that facilitate Iran's circumvention of sanctions.
In a related development, the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has disputed claims made by Iran's Revolutionary Guards regarding an incident involving a Panama-flagged oil tanker, El Gaia. The Iranian military had alleged that the vessel struck a naval mine in the Strait of Hormuz. However, CENTCOM clarified that the tanker was actually hit by an Iranian missile last month and was attacked again over the weekend by a drone while it was anchored off the coast of Oman.
This incident has heightened tensions in the region, with CENTCOM describing the Iranian claims as an example of misinformation and intimidation tactics aimed at disrupting commercial shipping in the strategic strait. The situation has drawn sharp responses from Iranian officials, including President Masoud Pezeshkian, who asserted that Iran would not be coerced into submission despite ongoing assaults on its civilian infrastructure.
Pezeshkian took to social media platform X to express his views, stating, "If Americans are warriors, let them face our valiant military forces. Why wage war on civilian infrastructure, food supplies, and livelihoods?" His remarks underscore the ongoing conflict between the U.S. and Iran, which has seen a series of confrontations and accusations from both sides.
The designation of VTB Bank marks a significant step in the U.S. strategy to tighten the economic noose around Iran and its allies, reflecting a broader geopolitical struggle that continues to evolve in the region.
