The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a severe thunderstorm alert, cautioning residents across Nigeria about impending storms that are expected to affect 26 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The alert was released on Monday, September 14, 2026, at 4:00 p.m., with NiMet indicating that active thunderstorms were already present in several northern states.

As reported, the thunderstorms are currently impacting Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Taraba, Plateau, Kano, Jigawa, and Kaduna. The weather system is forecasted to move westward, reaching additional states within one to six hours of the alert. The agency's warning highlights the potential for flash flooding, power disruptions, and hazardous road conditions as the storms progress.

NiMet has identified the states likely to be affected by the severe weather, which include Kano, Yobe, Gombe, Bauchi, Jigawa, Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi, Sokoto, Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa, Kogi, Benue, Enugu, Abia, Imo, Delta, Bayelsa, Anambra, Ebonyi, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.

In addition to the immediate threat of thunderstorms, NiMet has flagged several secondary hazards associated with the weather system. These include the risk of flash flooding in low-lying areas, falling tree branches, and the displacement of loose objects due to strong winds. The agency has also warned of potential power disruptions and electrical hazards, as well as reduced visibility and slippery roads, which could pose significant risks to motorists.

Farmers are advised to take precautions as heavy rainfall could wash away nutrients from soils where fertilizers or pesticides have been applied, potentially affecting crop yields. NiMet has urged residents to secure any loose items left outdoors and has recommended that motorists exercise caution by slowing down during rainfall and avoiding driving through flooded areas.

In light of the forecast, NiMet has also issued guidance to airline operators, advising them to obtain airport-specific weather reports to ensure safe flight planning. The agency has encouraged the public to stay informed by regularly checking for updates as the weather situation evolves.
