Military reports significant 73% decline in attacks across operations in October
October 2026 saw a dramatic drop in military attacks, with 98 incidents reported compared to 367 in September.

The Nigerian military has reported a remarkable 73.3% decrease in the number of attacks across its operational theatres in October 2026. The Defence Headquarters disclosed that there were 98 incidents last month, a stark contrast to 367 recorded in September. This significant reduction reflects the military's ongoing operational successes and strategic efforts to combat insurgency and criminal activities across the country.
Maj. Gen. Michael Onoja, the Director of Defence Media Operations, provided the update during a press briefing in Abuja. He noted that the decline in attacks represents 269 fewer incidents within just one month, showcasing the effectiveness of military operations.
A closer look at the October statistics reveals that Operation Enduring Peace experienced the highest number of attacks with 29 incidents, followed closely by Operation Hadin Kai with 27 and Operation Fansan Yamma with 24. Other operations such as Operation Whirl Stroke recorded 12 attacks, while Operation Udo Ka had four. Both Operation Delta Safe and Operation Savannah Shield reported only one attack each.
In addition to the reduction in attacks, the military's efforts yielded significant results in terms of neutralizing threats and recovering stolen resources. During the month, the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) neutralized over 217 terrorists and criminals, arrested 333 suspects, and rescued 349 victims from kidnappers. Furthermore, 70 insurgents surrendered to the troops, and a substantial cache of arms was seized, including 105 firearms and 3,174 rounds of ammunition.
The military's operations against oil theft have also seen success, with the recovery of 756,837 litres of stolen crude oil and the destruction of 49 illegal refining sites. These actions are part of ongoing efforts to combat economic sabotage and ensure the security of the nation’s resources.
Despite the positive developments, Maj. Gen. Onoja expressed condolences to the families of civilians killed in recent terrorist attacks in Taraba State, particularly in Binari, Karim Lamido Local Government Area, on October 23. He emphasized the military's commitment to apprehending those responsible for such attacks and bringing them to justice.
The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, reiterated the need for the military to maintain discipline and uphold human rights, especially as the festive season approaches. He urged security agencies to enhance intelligence sharing and collaborative planning while encouraging community leaders and residents to report any suspicious activities to the authorities or through the military's toll-free line, 193.
