Ladipo Johnson, the National Democratic Congress candidate for the Lagos Central Senatorial District, has raised alarming concerns about the potential for significant flooding in parts of Lagos within the next two to three decades if immediate action is not taken to address drainage issues and land reclamation practices. Johnson shared his insights during the unveiling of his vision and legislative agenda for the district on Tuesday.

The former spokesman for the New Nigeria People’s Party highlighted the rising water levels in areas such as Lagos Island, Marina, and the Lagoon, attributing these changes to a combination of blocked drainage systems and extensive engineering projects. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive evaluation of the environmental impacts of developments like the Ilubirin project, questioning whether proper environmental assessments were conducted before construction began.

Johnson pointed out that many drainage paths have been obstructed, making it increasingly difficult for water to flow freely. He stated, "When you drive through Adeniji Adele from Ebute Elefun, inwards to the Third Mainland Bridge and Idumagbo, look to your right. You will see some drainage paths where people are already rearing cattle."

He warned that without addressing these issues holistically, parts of Lagos could be submerged in the coming decades. Johnson specifically mentioned Isale Eko, Lekki, and Apapa, all within his senatorial district, as areas at risk. He also noted that flooding is not limited to these regions, with various neighborhoods across Lagos experiencing similar challenges.

The candidate attributed some of the flooding issues to poor environmental practices among residents, calling for increased public awareness and a shift in behavior. He remarked on the littering problem, particularly around the Nnamdi Azikiwe area on Lagos Island, where market waste contributes to drainage blockages. Johnson expressed the need for community reorientation to foster cleaner habits among the populace.

Recent heavy rains have exacerbated flooding in Lagos, affecting numerous areas including Gbagada, Iyana Ipaja, and Ikorodu Road, disrupting daily life and causing property damage. The Lagos State Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Dayo Bush-Alebiosu, echoed Johnson's concerns, linking the flooding crisis to illegal land reclamation and poor waste disposal practices.

In his campaign, Johnson underscored the importance of Lagos Central as Nigeria's economic hub, stating that it deserves stronger representation in the National Assembly. He criticized the lack of recognition of senators among the public and highlighted the need for lawmakers to be more engaged with their constituents. "Lagos must have a voice in this area," he asserted, emphasizing the critical role of effective representation in addressing pressing issues like flooding and environmental degradation.
