Peter Obi calls for urgent action to combat insecurity in Nigeria's North-Central region
The presidential candidate condemns recent violence and urges government intervention.

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has expressed grave concern over the escalating violence in Nigeria's North-Central region, particularly in Benue, Plateau, and Niger states. In a statement shared on his X handle, Obi condemned the recent killings and abductions, warning that the country must not devolve into a "killing field."
Obi's comments come in the wake of alarming reports of deadly attacks in these states. In Plateau State, at least 23 people were confirmed dead in an attack in Mangu, although local residents believe the death toll exceeds 30. Additionally, over 45 houses were destroyed during this incident. In Niger State, violence has reportedly claimed the lives of more than 40 individuals, with over 100 others abducted, although these figures are still being debated.
The former governor of Anambra State highlighted that these incidents represent a national security emergency, urging all levels of government to take immediate and decisive action to safeguard vulnerable communities and prevent further loss of life. He lamented that despite Nigeria not being officially at war, citizens are facing relentless attacks in their own villages, often targeted after communal prayers and driven from their homes.
Obi emphasized that the violence in Benue, Plateau, and Niger should not be viewed as isolated events but rather as part of a broader pattern of insecurity affecting various regions across the nation. He called for a comprehensive approach to security that includes strengthening intelligence gathering and enhancing rapid-response capabilities.
"I urge governments at all levels to wake up to their responsibility and take urgent and decisive action to end this madness once and for all," Obi stated. He underscored the necessity for the government to focus on preventive measures rather than merely reacting after tragedies occur.
"We cannot keep counting bodies after every attack. We must prevent these attacks before they happen. Protecting lives and property is the most basic duty of government. Nigerians deserve nothing less," he asserted.
Obi's call to action comes at a critical time when insecurity continues to plague various parts of Nigeria, raising questions about the effectiveness of current security measures and the government's commitment to protecting its citizens. As the situation develops, many are looking to the government for a robust response to these pressing security challenges.
