In a notable political development, over 500 Islamic clerics and scholars from across Nigeria have officially endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term in office. This endorsement was announced following a closed-door meeting held in Jigawa State, which included prominent political figures such as Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau and presidential aide Ibrahim Masari.

The gathering, which featured six northern governors from the All Progressives Congress (APC), marked a significant moment in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections. Although the identities of the governors present were not disclosed, their participation alongside influential religious leaders underscores an early effort to consolidate political support for Tinubu.

Masari, who has been a long-time political ally of Tinubu, played a crucial role in the meeting, emphasizing the importance of religious backing in the political landscape. Deputy Senate President Barau, representing Kano North, is regarded as one of the senior northern figures in the National Assembly, further adding weight to the proceedings.

The clerics' endorsement is one of the largest expressions of support from Nigeria's Islamic community since Tinubu assumed office in May 2023. This move signals a proactive approach by Tinubu's camp to secure a broad coalition of regional and religious support well ahead of the upcoming campaign season.

Political activity is already ramping up as the 2027 elections draw closer. Recently, Abdulaziz Yari, a senator from Zamfara West and former governor, was appointed as the director-general of the APC presidential campaign council. Yari expressed his commitment to ensuring Tinubu's re-election, stating he accepted the role with "deep gratitude" and a serious commitment to the task ahead.

As the political landscape evolves, the endorsement from the clerics could play a pivotal role in shaping the dynamics of the upcoming elections, highlighting the intersection of religion and politics in Nigeria's electoral process.
