Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has publicly expressed his concerns regarding the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) decision to withhold certain records related to President Bola Tinubu. The FBI recently filed a motion in the US District Court for the District of Columbia, seeking permission to submit confidential declarations explaining why it cannot disclose information pertaining to allegations of drug trafficking involving Tinubu.

The FBI's application, dated August 20, argues that releasing the information could pose a "danger to lives." However, Atiku has challenged this rationale, suggesting that the current economic hardships faced by Nigerians are already endangering lives. In a statement released on Saturday in Abuja by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku stated, "The FBI says disclosure could endanger lives. Which lives? Nigerians are already dying."

Atiku linked the ongoing economic struggles to the recent removal of the fuel subsidy, which he claims has led to significant increases in transportation costs, food prices, and production expenses. He emphasized the cascading effects of these changes on jobs and household incomes, stating, "Fuel affects transportation. Transportation affects food prices. Energy affects production. Production affects jobs. All of them determine whether an ordinary Nigerian family can survive until the end of the month."

The former Vice President reiterated his commitment to reversing the fuel subsidy removal if elected, promising an accountable approach that would prevent abuse. He clarified that his demand for transparency regarding the FBI records does not extend to sensitive information that could compromise ongoing investigations, such as the identities of undercover agents or confidential sources.

Atiku urged the FBI to protect its agents and sources while still allowing for the necessary information to be disclosed to the public. He stated, "Protect your agents. Protect your sources. Protect legitimate investigative methods. Redact whatever American law genuinely requires you to redact. But do not stretch those protections until they become a bulletproof vest for Tinubu."

In his remarks, Atiku framed his appeal as a democratic necessity rather than an interference in Nigeria's internal matters, asserting that the Nigerian populace has a right to be informed about the character and background of their leaders. His comments come at a time when the public is increasingly demanding accountability and transparency from government officials, particularly in light of serious allegations that could impact national governance.
