The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has been issued a 24-hour ultimatum to resign amid mounting criticism over its management of football in the country. This directive reportedly comes from the National Sports Commission (NSC) following the dismal performance of the national teams, particularly the Super Eagles and Super Falcons, who failed to qualify for their respective World Cups.

The Super Eagles did not secure a spot in the 2026 World Cup, while the Super Falcons missed out on the 2027 Women’s World Cup, marking the first time in history that Nigeria's female team will not participate in the tournament. These failures have raised serious concerns among football stakeholders and fans alike, prompting the NSC to take action.

In response to the crisis, the NSC convened a meeting at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa to discuss the situation with presidential aides, including a scheduled meeting with Chief of Staff, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila. The discussions are part of broader efforts to address the ongoing issues plaguing Nigerian football.

Despite the urgency of the ultimatum, NFF Board member Nse Essien has dismissed claims that the Federal Government is demanding the resignation of the NFF leadership. He labeled the reports as “fake news,” asserting that there has been no official directive from the government regarding the resignation of the federation's executives.

The NFF had previously announced elections for its executive committee, set for September 27, with the current president, Ibrahim Gusau, seeking a second four-year term. However, it has emerged that the NSC has postponed these elections to resolve pressing issues related to the electoral process.

As the deadline looms, the future of the NFF and its leadership remains uncertain, with stakeholders closely watching how the situation unfolds in the coming hours. The outcome could have significant implications for the governance of football in Nigeria and its representation on the global stage.
