President Bola Tinubu has sharply criticized the promise made by Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, to reinstate the petrol subsidy if he wins the 2027 elections. During a meeting with Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Tinubu labeled Atiku's proposal as a clear demonstration of "serious ignorance" regarding governance and economic management.

Tinubu's remarks came in the wake of his recent re-election victory, where he reflected on the fiscal challenges faced by Nigerian states prior to the removal of the subsidy. He highlighted that, at the time, 27 states were struggling to pay salaries, which severely impacted the livelihoods of workers and pensioners. "Before I came here, 27 states are unable to pay salaries, not to even talk of pensioners," he stated, emphasizing the dire economic conditions that necessitated the subsidy’s removal.

The President argued that the reforms implemented after the subsidy was lifted have directly benefited ordinary Nigerians and their families. He pointed out that the funds previously used for subsidies are now being funneled into state and local government initiatives that support essential services such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure development. "Take out the president, we got every other person. Ask common men, their families, to feed, the infrastructure you embark upon on the road network, housing, school rehabilitation, hospital, healthcare pronouncements," Tinubu explained.

In his address, Tinubu also urged Governor Adeleke to focus on governance rather than celebrating electoral victories. He emphasized the importance of translating electoral mandates into tangible actions that promote unity, peace, and stability in the state. "You are in a very, very unique position to make history, promote unity, peace and stability," he said, encouraging the governor to build on his electoral success.

Furthermore, Tinubu called for political magnanimity among all political actors, stressing that true democracy requires celebrating the outcomes of free and fair elections. He remarked, "Anybody, any democrat, anybody in the political environment who cannot celebrate the joy of a free and fair election does not deserve the laughter and the happiness of democracy."

As he concluded his remarks, Tinubu reiterated the need for cooperation and unity among political leaders, urging them to avoid stigmatizing opponents and instead work towards the collective good of the nation. His comments reflect ongoing tensions in Nigeria's political landscape as the country prepares for the upcoming elections in 2027.
