Muslim Women's Conference in Abia to Tackle Insecurity and Economic Challenges
Over 600 participants are set to attend the FOMWAN conference in Umuahia, focusing on resilience and responsibility.

The Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN) is set to kick off its 2026 Annual National Conference in Umuahia, Abia State, on Friday, with an expected attendance of over 600 participants. This year's conference, themed "Faith, Resilience and Responsibility: Muslim Women Responding to Challenges," aims to unite women leaders, scholars, entrepreneurs, and community stakeholders to address pressing national issues.
Dr. Sumaye Fadimatu Hamza, the 11th National Amirah of FOMWAN, highlighted the significance of the conference theme, emphasizing the urgent need for collective action to confront the myriad challenges faced by Nigerians today. In a press briefing held in Umuahia, she pointed out that the nation is grappling with insecurity, economic hardship, youth unemployment, and other humanitarian crises that affect millions.
"These realities call for renewed commitment, collective responsibility, and purposeful leadership," Dr. Hamza stated. She expressed the belief that Muslim women, driven by their faith and a commitment to service, should not succumb to despair in the face of adversity. Instead, she encouraged them to harness their resilience, compassion, and innovation to foster constructive change in their communities.
The conference is designed to serve as a platform for dialogue and networking, focusing on critical issues such as security, education, economic empowerment, and the role of women in peacebuilding. Participants will engage in discussions aimed at generating practical recommendations to strengthen families and communities, as well as to enhance institutional support systems.
Dr. Hamza also noted FOMWAN's longstanding commitment to various developmental initiatives over the past four decades, which include education, healthcare, and women's empowerment. The organization has played a pivotal role in community development and has been active in promoting gender and human rights.
In light of the challenges facing vulnerable populations, FOMWAN has called for increased investment in several key areas, including education and skills development, mental health support, and youth mentorship. The organization advocates for stronger partnerships among stakeholders to effectively address these pressing issues and promote sustainable development across Nigeria.
As the conference unfolds, it is expected to galvanize efforts towards resilience and responsibility among Muslim women, reinforcing their vital role in addressing the socio-economic challenges of the nation.
