Dangote Petroleum Refinery has announced a price increase for diesel, raising its gantry price by N100 per litre, effective from midnight on August 21. The new price of N1,670 per litre marks a 6.4% increase from the previous rate of N1,570. This adjustment comes after a period of stable pricing at the refinery.

The latest price hike places the refinery's diesel cost N21 above the current diesel landing cost, which stands at N1,649 per litre. Despite this increase, the new rate remains N30 cheaper than the N1,700 per litre charged by several depots in Lagos, including African Terminal and Integrated.

This increase in diesel prices is significant for many Nigerian businesses that rely on diesel-powered generators due to inconsistent public electricity supply. Sectors such as transportation, manufacturing, telecommunications, and construction could experience higher operational costs if the price hike is passed on to consumers. Market analysts predict that the adjustment may prompt marketers to re-evaluate their pricing strategies in the coming days.

The rise in diesel prices coincides with a turbulent period in global crude oil markets, where Brent crude has recently traded above $93 per barrel. Factors such as geopolitical tensions involving Iran and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have contributed to these fluctuations. Changes in international crude prices often have a direct impact on the cost of refined products, influencing domestic pricing structures.

As Nigeria increasingly relies on Dangote's refinery for petroleum products, the new pricing strategy could lead to a ripple effect across various sectors. Marketers purchasing diesel directly from the refinery will face increased costs, which may subsequently affect transport, manufacturing, and power generation expenses throughout the economy.

Additionally, there are indications that independent suppliers may also adjust their prices in response to Dangote's new rates. Recent reports have highlighted that some marketers linked to the refinery have been selling petrol above the official rates, suggesting a potential trend of rising fuel prices across the board.

As the situation develops, stakeholders in the diesel and broader petroleum market will be closely monitoring these changes to gauge their impact on the economy and consumer pricing.
