The Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.), has issued a stark warning regarding the upcoming 2027 general elections, stating that no security measures can ensure peaceful electoral processes if political actors opt for violence instead of dialogue. Speaking at the eighth edition of the Blueprint Newspaper Lecture, Musa highlighted the critical role of all stakeholders in maintaining electoral integrity.

Musa, represented by his Senior Special Adviser on Policy and Strategy, Maj.-Gen. Olufemi Akinjobi (retd.), stressed that misinformation could undermine electoral laws, making it essential for political parties to prioritize national interest over personal or partisan gains. He pointed out that political competition should not be perceived as warfare, urging candidates to engage in civil discourse.

In his address, Musa proposed a six-point framework aimed at enhancing election security, which includes:

  • Strategic intelligence integration
  • Threat assessment
  • Protection of digital infrastructure
  • Electoral cyber resilience
  • Civil-military coordination
  • Unified strategic communications

These pillars are intended to create a robust pathway for securing elections and maintaining the democratic legitimacy crucial for national stability. As Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections, Musa assured that the Ministry of Defence would collaborate closely with various security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, and the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Musa reiterated that the Armed Forces of Nigeria maintain a non-partisan stance in electoral matters, emphasizing their commitment to peace and democratic order. "The Armed Forces owe allegiance neither to political parties nor to individual candidates. Our allegiance is to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria," he stated.

He also called on the media to uphold high standards of accuracy and responsibility in their reporting, and urged civil society organizations to promote civic education and encourage peaceful participation in the electoral process. Traditional and religious leaders were encouraged to act as voices of moderation and reconciliation within their communities.

In a poignant appeal to the youth, Musa urged young Nigerians to reject any attempts to involve them in violence or political manipulation, emphasizing their potential to contribute positively to the nation’s future. "Their talents are needed not to disrupt democracy, but to strengthen it," he remarked.

Musa concluded by asserting that every citizen has a role in ensuring credible elections, stating, "Every vote carries not only a political choice but also a commitment to the future of our Republic." He expressed the hope that the 2027 elections would not only be a routine electoral exercise but a step towards a stronger, more united Nigeria, confident in its democratic institutions. He commended Blueprint Newspapers for facilitating this important national dialogue, recognizing responsible journalism as a vital component of national security and democratic governance.
