Over 700 APC Members Switch to ADC in Sokoto Amid Discontent
A significant political shift occurs in Sokoto as over 700 APC members defect to ADC, citing neglect.

In a striking political development, more than 700 members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State. This mass exodus, which took place on Monday, highlights growing dissatisfaction among party members regarding perceived neglect and inadequate representation by the APC leadership.
The defection involved members from the Goronyo and Shinaka wards, which is the home council of Muhammad Bello Goronyo, the Minister of State for Works. The group was led by Alhaji Aliyu Tunau Shinaka, a former APC Secretary in Goronyo and a two-time Special Adviser to the Sokoto State Government. Other notable figures who joined the ADC include the local APC Youth Leader, Alhaji Ibrahim Ado Taloka, and prominent community leaders such as Hajiya Shafa’atu S/Pawa Goronyo.
During the defection ceremony, Shinaka expressed deep frustration over the APC's failure to address the needs of its grassroots members. He stated, "We have decided to leave the APC because our people have been abandoned. The party leadership has failed to address the concerns of members who worked tirelessly for the success of the party." He further criticized the Minister of State for Works for not delivering the expected leadership and development initiatives for the Goronyo community and the broader Sokoto East Senatorial District.
The defectors voiced their concerns over the deteriorating security situation in Goronyo and surrounding areas, accusing the minister of neglecting the plight of victims of banditry. Shinaka remarked, "Our people are being killed and abducted. Families have lost their breadwinners, yet we have not seen the necessary support or presence from those who are supposed to represent us."
Alhaji Ibrahim Ado Taloka echoed these sentiments, stating that many APC supporters in Goronyo felt disillusioned with the party's leadership. He emphasized the need for a political platform that prioritizes the welfare and security of the people, saying, "This is not about personal interest. We are responding to the yearnings of our people. They want leadership that will listen to them, protect them, and improve their living conditions."
The speakers at the event also highlighted the adverse effects of insecurity on local farming and economic activities, noting that many residents are now too afraid to go to their farms due to bandit attacks. They claimed that over 100 residents from Goronyo Local Government are currently held captive by bandits, a statement that remains unverified.
The decision to join the ADC is seen as a move towards finding a political alternative ahead of the 2027 general elections. Taloka expressed optimism about the ADC's potential, stating, "We believe the ADC has the potential to bring a new political direction to the country and Sokoto State. We are ready to work for the emergence of a government that will provide security, peace, and development."
This mass defection marks a significant shift in Sokoto's political landscape and reflects the growing trend of political realignments as the state approaches the upcoming elections.
