Pensioners in Enugu State can look forward to improved financial support as the state government has approved a new minimum pension of N32,000 for local government retirees. This decision is expected to significantly enhance the welfare of retirees, many of whom have been struggling with inadequate monthly payments.

The announcement was made by Dr. Eric Oluedo, the Executive Secretary of the Enugu State Local Government Staff Pensions Board. He emphasized that payments will commence once the necessary administrative processes are finalized. Governor Peter Mbah has already given his approval for the new minimum pension, marking a positive shift in the state's approach to pension administration.

In addition to the pension increase, the Enugu State government is set to launch a free health insurance scheme for all local government pensioners on August 20, 2026. This initiative aims to provide retirees with access to quality healthcare, further enhancing their overall well-being. Oluedo urged pensioners to promptly submit their current data through their respective Local Government Staff Pensions Desk Officers to facilitate their enrollment in the scheme.

Oluedo praised Governor Mbah for his compassionate leadership and transformative policies, stating that the administration has made significant strides in ensuring timely pension payments. Since July 2024, pensions have been paid regularly, even before the salaries of regular staff, a marked improvement from previous years when retirees faced delays of up to 27 months.

The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Enugu State Council, recently appealed to Governor Mbah to implement a pension review linked to the new national minimum wage, which would raise the minimum pension to N32,000. The union highlighted that some retirees currently receive as little as N447 monthly, underscoring the urgent need for reform to address the rising cost of living.

Ikechukwu Ekere, the State Chairman of the NUP, acknowledged the governor's efforts in restoring regular pension payments and clearing long-standing arrears. However, he pointed out that the non-payment of gratuities remains a critical issue for many retirees. Local government and primary school pensioners have not received gratuity payments since 2006, while state retirees have been waiting since 2010.

As the state government prepares to implement these significant changes, the hope among Enugu's retirees is palpable. The commitment to clearing outstanding pension liabilities and improving the overall pension system reflects a growing recognition of the challenges faced by pensioners in the state. With these developments, many retirees are optimistic about a more secure financial future.
