The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has officially banned the Amotekun Corps and all other non-state security groups from engaging in security operations during the Osun State governorship election scheduled for August 15, 2026. This announcement comes as part of the police's efforts to ensure a peaceful electoral process and maintain law and order throughout the election period.

Force Public Relations Officer, Anietie Iniedu, issued a statement on August 14, 2026, clarifying that only agencies recognized under the Nigerian Constitution and federal law are authorized to conduct security and law enforcement duties related to the election. The police emphasized that vigilante organizations and other unauthorized bodies are not permitted to participate in election-related security activities.

Iniedu's statement stressed the importance of maintaining public peace and security, warning that any actions by non-state actors that could intimidate voters or disrupt the electoral process would not be tolerated. The police urged these groups to refrain from any involvement in the election, reinforcing their commitment to a secure and fair voting environment.

In addition to the ban on non-state security outfits, the NPF has implemented a movement restriction across Osun State, effective from midnight on August 14 until 6:00 p.m. on August 15. During this time, only individuals and vehicles specifically exempted by the authorities will be allowed to move freely within the state. The police have called on residents to comply fully with this restriction and cooperate with security personnel deployed to maintain order.

The police also directed political parties, candidates, and their supporters to conduct themselves peacefully during the election period. They warned that any behavior likely to incite violence or disrupt the electoral process would face consequences. The NPF has encouraged Osun residents to remain calm, adhere to the law, and report any suspicious activities to recognized security agencies.

This proactive approach by the Nigeria Police Force aims to ensure that all political actors and eligible voters can participate in a safe and fair electoral process on polling day, thereby reinforcing the integrity of the democratic process in Osun State.
