The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has taken a significant step towards modernising the judicial system in Abuja by approving contracts for the digitisation of the FCT High Courts. This initiative, which is set to begin within two weeks, aims to overhaul the current manual record-keeping system and implement a more efficient, automated judicial management platform.

Salman Dako, the General Counsel and Mandate Secretary of the FCT Legal Services Secretariat, announced the approval following an Executive Council meeting chaired by Wike. Dako highlighted that the project will encompass 67 courtrooms across the Federal Capital Territory, providing them with essential electronic recording and case management facilities.

The digital transformation project is designed to replace traditional handwritten court records with a streamlined electronic documentation process. Dako elaborated on the initiative's goals, stating, "We are transitioning the High Court from manual recording to digital recording, and electronic case management." This shift is particularly crucial as the FCT judiciary has faced numerous challenges associated with manual filing procedures and the physical tracking of cases, which often lead to delays in justice delivery.

The newly approved contracts aim to tackle these persistent issues by introducing technology-driven processes that will enhance the speed, accessibility, and organisation of judicial records. Dako expressed optimism about the potential improvements, stating, "Transitioning to digital court management will resolve the persistent challenges linked to manual documentation and handwritten records."

Additionally, the new system will facilitate electronic case filing for legal practitioners and litigants, significantly reducing reliance on physical documents and manual processes. Dako noted that some judicial divisions outside the FCT have already begun implementing similar digital initiatives, indicating a broader trend towards modernisation in the Nigerian judiciary.

The contract period for the digitisation project is set at two weeks, after which visible progress is anticipated. This initiative is expected to establish a new benchmark for judicial efficiency and court administration in Nigeria's capital, marking a pivotal moment in the evolution of the legal system in the region.
