The Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Festus Osifo, has expressed his support for the Department of State Services (DSS) following their recent efforts in arresting and prosecuting individuals suspected of terrorism and banditry across Nigeria. Osifo made these remarks during a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, where he emphasized the importance of these actions in sending a strong message to criminal elements threatening the safety of communities nationwide.
Osifo stated, "When they are arrested and prosecuted, the bad guys get the clear message," underscoring the significance of the DSS's work in combating crime. He further endorsed the DSS's stance that those involved in acts of terrorism that lead to loss of life should face the death penalty, suggesting that such severe consequences could deter potential offenders.
He remarked, "When that is done, the other bad guys will know it is no longer business as usual," highlighting the need for a robust legal framework to address the ongoing security challenges in the country.
In addition to commending the DSS for its recent successes, Osifo urged the agency to maintain its momentum in apprehending and prosecuting criminals. He emphasized the role of citizens in holding the government accountable for its actions, stating that it is essential to recognize both positive and negative actions by the authorities. "When government does wrong things, we condemn them. When they do positive things, we are also duty bound to commend," he noted.
Osifo also praised the DSS Director-General, Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, for implementing reforms within the agency and encouraged him to continue intensifying efforts to combat insecurity in the country. His comments reflect a growing consensus on the need for a united front against the rising tide of violence and criminality in Nigeria.
