Osun Election: Every lawful vote must be properly recorded – Tinubu tells INEC

President Bola Tinubu has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to guarantee that every lawful vote cast in the upcoming Osun State governorship election is accurately recorded. His statement comes as the state prepares for the election scheduled for August 15, 2026.

In a message shared on his official X account, Tinubu stressed the need for security agencies to protect voters, electoral officials, and election materials, underscoring that no Nigerian life should be lost over an electoral contest. He emphasized the importance of a peaceful, transparent, and fair electoral process, urging all stakeholders to contribute positively.

The President has directed the Inspector-General of Police and other security agencies involved in the election to ensure the safety of all participants. He stated, "Every citizen must be able to exercise his or her right to vote without fear, intimidation, or violence. There must be no room for anyone seeking to disrupt the process or undermine the peace of Osun State."

Tinubu further urged INEC to conduct the election with the utmost professionalism and integrity, insisting that every vote must count. He remarked that the Osun election is a critical opportunity for INEC to showcase its readiness for the 2027 general elections and to bolster public confidence in the electoral process.

He encouraged the residents of Osun to participate actively and peacefully in the election, reminding them to respect the rights of others to make their own choices. "To the people of Osun State, I ask you to come out in your numbers and exercise your civic responsibility peacefully. Vote for the candidate of your choice. Respect the rights of your fellow citizens to make their own choice," he said.

Tinubu reiterated that elections should be seen as contests of ideas and service rather than occasions for violence. He affirmed that the Federal Government has implemented measures to support a peaceful election, emphasizing the government's role in protecting both the electoral process and the populace.

Finally, he urged all stakeholders to respect the election's outcome, regardless of the winning candidate, stating, "The decision belongs to the people of Osun State. Whatever that decision may be, it must be respected."
