Osun election: IReV just viewing centre, not adding machine – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a clarification regarding the functionality of its Results Viewing Portal (IReV) in the context of the upcoming Osun State governorship election. INEC National Commissioner, Prof. Kunle Ajayi, stated that the IReV is intended solely for public display of polling unit results and does not serve as an automatic collation or addition system for election results.

Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme, Ajayi reassured the public that all results from the Osun election would be uploaded to the IReV portal. He emphasized that the commission is committed to enhancing its performance in the transmission of results, stating, "All the results will go on IReV, I can assure you of that. What is going to be different is that we are going to perform better."

Ajayi explained that once results are ready, they will be captured and transmitted to the IReV using the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS). He addressed common misconceptions about the IReV, highlighting that it is not an adding machine. "The IReV is a viewing centre. There’s a misinformation when it comes to the function of the IReV. It’s not an adding system because some people are expecting that immediately results are coming in, they’ll be adding like that; at the end of the day, there will be a gross trader," he noted.

The commissioner further clarified that while individuals, groups, and institutions can independently collate results displayed on the IReV by adding figures from polling units, the critical question remains whether the results transmitted to the IReV differ from those reported at the polling units.

This clarification comes as part of INEC's efforts to ensure transparency and build trust in the electoral process ahead of the Osun State governorship election.
