Joshua Wong, a prominent activist from Hong Kong, has been sentenced to an additional 10 years in prison under a national security law imposed by Beijing. This latest ruling comes after Wong pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to collude with foreign forces, a decision made earlier this year. Wong, who is currently serving a separate sentence of four years and eight months for his involvement in the city's largest national security case, was initially expected to be released in January 2027.

The sentencing was carried out by Judge William Tam, who described Wong's actions as serious offenses that warranted a significant punishment. The judge emphasized that Wong, along with fellow activist Nathan Law, had continued to engage in conspiratorial activities aimed at soliciting foreign interference in Hong Kong and China’s affairs. This included efforts that led to the revocation of Hong Kong's special treatment status by the United States and the imposition of sanctions against Chinese and Hong Kong officials.

Judge Tam stated, "The punishment must fit the gravity of the crime committed," highlighting the need for the court to reflect the community's disapproval of Wong's actions. He noted that while he considered a 13-year sentence as a baseline, he opted for a lesser term due to Wong's guilty plea and mitigating circumstances. Wong will serve the remaining two months of his prior sentence concurrently with this new term.

In a statement released from prison, Wong expressed that his political motivations were never rooted in hatred and he does not harbor resentment towards the governments of China or Hong Kong. He acknowledged that he believed he was acting within the law at the time, only to later realize the misjudgment of his actions. Over the past six years of incarceration, Wong has taken university courses and read extensively, stating that he aims to emerge from this experience as a more responsible individual.

Wong's sentencing underscores the ongoing crackdown on dissent in Hong Kong, where many activists have faced severe legal repercussions under the national security law enacted in 2020. This law has been widely criticized for stifling free speech and political opposition in the region, raising concerns about the future of civil liberties in Hong Kong.
