Benin President Wadagni reshuffles military leadership amid rising security threats
In a significant military restructuring, President Romuald Wadagni has appointed new leaders to address security challenges in northern Benin.

Benin Republic's President, Romuald Wadagni, has executed a notable reshuffle in the military leadership, responding to escalating security threats in the northern regions of the country. This restructuring comes nearly a year after a failed coup attempt against his predecessor, Patrice Talon, which was thwarted with assistance from France and Nigeria.
The military changes were announced on Wednesday and include the appointment of General Abou Issa as the new head of the armed forces, taking over from General Fructeux Gbaguidi, who has been reassigned as the permanent secretary of the National Defence and Security Council. Additionally, Colonel Andre Dokoui Fofo has been appointed to lead the army, while Colonel Herve Setondji Allotchenou will head the air force, and Captain Dossa Hounkpatin takes command of the navy.
These appointments come at a critical time as Wadagni faces increasing pressure to tackle the deteriorating security situation in northern Benin, where jihadist groups linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State have intensified their activities along the borders with Burkina Faso and Niger. The region has seen a rise in attacks, raising concerns about the safety of civilians and the stability of the government.
Wadagni, who previously served as the economy minister under Talon for a decade, succeeded him as president in April 2026. His administration is now tasked with addressing both the immediate security challenges and the broader diplomatic issues arising from strained relations with neighboring countries, particularly those that are currently under military rule.
The military governments in Burkina Faso and Niger have expressed skepticism regarding Benin's close ties with France, complicating efforts for regional security cooperation. As Wadagni implements these changes, he aims to reinforce the military's capabilities to respond effectively to the growing threats from jihadist groups and to stabilize the country’s security landscape.
The recent military reshuffle reflects Wadagni's commitment to ensuring that the armed forces are adequately prepared to confront these challenges head-on, as he navigates the complex political and security dynamics in the region.
