Spanish police investigate death of Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel after match collision
A formal investigation has been launched into the death of Jesús de Miguel, who collapsed during a match.

Spanish police have initiated a formal investigation into the tragic death of Jesús de Miguel, a 30-year-old striker for CD Tenerife, who passed away following a cardiac arrest during a league match. The incident occurred on November 2, 2026, during a second-division game against Andorra, where de Miguel was involved in a collision with goalkeeper Jesús Owono.
The collision took place in stoppage time when Owono rushed out to clear the ball and struck de Miguel in the chest. The match was immediately abandoned as medical personnel rushed to provide treatment on the field. De Miguel was later transported to a hospital, where he was initially reported to be in a stable condition. However, his health deteriorated overnight, leading to his death early the following morning.
In accordance with Spanish law, any death deemed non-natural triggers a mandatory judicial inquiry, which has now been confirmed by Spain's National Police. Prosecutors will also be involved in the investigation, although authorities in the Canary Islands clarified that this is standard procedure following such incidents.
CD Tenerife expressed their profound sorrow in a statement, describing the loss as heartbreaking and expressing disbelief over the tragedy. The club stated, "Heartbroken, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe this is true, we at CD Tenerife announce the tragic passing of Jesus de Miguel Alameda. There are no words of comfort. There is absolutely nothing that can ease this overwhelming sense of sadness."
Following the news of de Miguel's death, several prominent Spanish football clubs, including Barcelona and Real Madrid, paid tribute to the late striker, highlighting his impact on the sport and the loss felt across the football community.
In the wake of the incident, goalkeeper Jesús Owono has deactivated his Instagram account, and there has been no public statement from him regarding the collision. The world players' union, Fifpro, also released a tribute, stating, "Fifpro is deeply saddened by the passing of CD Tenerife player Jesus de Miguel. Our thoughts are with Jesus' family, friends, team-mates, everyone at CD Tenerife, and all those affected. Rest in peace, Jesus."
As the investigation continues, there are concerns regarding potential criminal charges against Owono. If investigators determine that there was gross negligence involved in the incident, he could face a prison sentence of up to four years. However, the red card issued to Owono during the match does not automatically imply legal fault, and the outcome will depend on the evidence gathered during the inquiry.
This tragic event has raised discussions about player safety and the risks associated with contact sports, as the football community mourns the loss of a promising athlete.
