The recent passing of Pa Reuben Fasoranti, a prominent figure in the Yoruba socio-political organization Afenifere, has ignited a fierce leadership struggle among its factions. Following his death, the Oba Oladipo Olaitan camp has moved to consolidate its leadership under his guidance, while other factions are resisting this shift and considering the formation of a new group, tentatively named Afenifere Independent.

In a statement released by the Olaitan camp, they emphasized their commitment to unifying the Yoruba people and honoring Fasoranti’s legacy. They described Olaitan as a leader capable of championing the interests of Afenifere while promoting national unity. However, many members from the opposing factions have expressed their discontent with this consolidation, indicating that they will not support Olaitan’s leadership.

A source within the group revealed that discussions are underway to create Afenifere Independent, as some members believe that neither of the existing factions can effectively lead the organization. This sentiment reflects deeper ideological divides within Afenifere, which have persisted since the era of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the group's founding leader.

Oba Olu Falae, the Chairman of the National Executive Committee of Afenifere, criticized the Olaitan camp's actions, deeming them premature and culturally inappropriate. He stressed that discussions regarding leadership succession should not take place until Fasoranti is given a proper burial, reinforcing the Yoruba tradition of honoring the deceased before addressing leadership matters.

The controversy surrounding Afenifere’s leadership has drawn attention to the historical context of Yoruba politics, which has been characterized by ideological splits since Awolowo’s time. Former spokesperson Mogaji Gboyega Adejumo highlighted this divide, noting that the political landscape has been shaped by two distinct tendencies: progressivism and reactionary politics. He warned that any attempt to impose leadership without consensus would be met with resistance.

As the factions grapple with these challenges, the Akure camp is reportedly preparing to nominate a former governor as Fasoranti’s successor, further complicating the leadership dynamics. The ongoing tensions within Afenifere have raised concerns about the future of the organization and its ability to present a unified front in the face of pressing political challenges.

The situation remains fluid, with some members advocating for a third force to emerge from the turmoil, while others urge caution and unity in the lead-up to the upcoming presidential elections. The fate of Afenifere hangs in the balance as its members navigate the delicate process of leadership transition amidst a backdrop of historical significance and cultural reverence.
