FAAN outlines ambitious plans for Nigeria's airport modernization at global summit
At the World Aviation Festival, FAAN's MD emphasized a passenger-focused approach to airport upgrades.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has unveiled its comprehensive vision for airport modernization, emphasizing the need for a passenger-centric approach that reflects Nigeria's diverse population. This announcement was made by the Managing Director/Chief Executive, Mrs. Olubunmi Onabanjo-Kuku, during her address at the World Aviation Festival held in Lisbon.
In her speech, Onabanjo-Kuku highlighted the unique challenges Nigeria faces in modernizing its airports, particularly given the country's rich cultural tapestry, which includes over 250 language communities. She stressed that the modernization strategy must not only incorporate advanced technology but also address the varying levels of digital literacy and accessibility needs among passengers.
FAAN's strategic priorities include enhancing multimodal connectivity, which is essential for integrating airports into broader urban transport networks. For instance, the existing rail connection in Abuja and the planned modernized rail system in Lagos aim to facilitate smoother passenger movement between terminals and cargo facilities, thereby reducing reliance on road transport.
Significant investments have already been made in airside infrastructure, with upgrades to runways and airfield lighting at major airports such as Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt. These improvements are crucial for maintaining operational safety and accommodating modern aircraft requirements.
Onabanjo-Kuku also pointed out that about 80% of Nigeria's airport traffic is concentrated in just three airports, with Lagos handling approximately 68% of the total. This concentration necessitates targeted capacity expansion while ensuring that other airports across the country also receive necessary attention and investment.
A major component of FAAN's modernization agenda is the rehabilitation of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Terminal 1 in Lagos. This project aims to enhance passenger processing efficiency through upgraded technology and improved infrastructure, ultimately creating a more user-friendly environment for travelers.
The role of technology in this modernization effort cannot be overstated. Onabanjo-Kuku emphasized that technology solutions must be tailored to the specific needs of each airport, ensuring they are accessible and intuitive for all passengers. This includes the deployment of digital processing solutions and self-service technologies that enhance the overall travel experience.
FAAN's commitment to a future-ready airport ecosystem is clear, as it seeks to blend digital transformation with sustainable financing and safety assurance. The organization aims to create an airport experience that is not only technologically advanced but also operationally efficient and inclusive for all Nigerians.
As Nigeria continues to engage in the global discourse on aviation, FAAN's approach underscores a commitment to prioritizing the needs of its citizens in the modernization of airport infrastructure. The vision articulated by Onabanjo-Kuku marks a pivotal step towards building an airport system that not only meets international standards but also serves the unique requirements of the Nigerian populace.
