Frank Tietie, a prominent lawyer and public affairs analyst, has voiced serious concerns regarding the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following the revelation of artificial intelligence-generated images in Nigeria's voters' register. Tietie characterized this situation as a potential national security threat, emphasizing the implications it holds for the integrity of the electoral process.

During a discussion on Arise News, Tietie criticized INEC's explanation that compromised officials were responsible for the generation of these images. He stated, "The only explanation INEC can give is that its compromised officers were responsible for generating those pictures and that information. That is a big problem." This admission raises alarming questions about the reliability of the voters' register and the risk of electoral manipulation through fictitious data.

Tietie acknowledged that while INEC had fulfilled its obligation to publish the voters' register, the commission now faces the pressing need to clarify the circumstances that led to this controversy. He suggested that INEC should consider convening a stakeholders' meeting with political parties to provide a thorough explanation of the situation.

The purpose of displaying the voters' register is to allow citizens to verify their personal information and correct any discrepancies before elections. However, Tietie expressed apprehension that the use of AI could result in the creation of fictitious voter cards, potentially inflating voter figures and undermining public trust in the electoral system.

He warned that this situation has already sparked suspicion among Nigerians regarding the integrity of the electoral process, even before the elections take place. Tietie urged INEC to take immediate action to restore public confidence, stating, "INEC must immediately redeem its integrity, or else it is leading the country towards its own form of anarchy. It must not be responsible for failing Nigerians."

Furthermore, Tietie highlighted that INEC has previously received adequate funding to perform its duties and should therefore be held accountable for any lapses. He insisted that the commission must demonstrate transparency and accountability in addressing these allegations.

To regain public trust, Tietie stressed that INEC's response must go beyond mere explanations. He called for concrete measures that would assure Nigerians that the integrity of the voters' register is being safeguarded. The current controversy poses a significant challenge for INEC, and how it responds could have lasting implications for the credibility of Nigeria's electoral process.
