Peter Obi vows to lead rescue missions against kidnappers if elected president
At a recent town hall meeting, Peter Obi pledged to tackle kidnapping head-on if he wins the 2027 election.

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has made a bold commitment to personally lead rescue operations against kidnappers if he secures victory in the 2027 elections. Speaking at a town hall meeting in Enugu on October 29, Obi emphasized that a president should not remain passive while citizens face abduction, contrasting his approach with the current administration's.
Obi's remarks came during a critical assessment of President Bola Tinubu's leadership, which he characterized as ineffective in addressing Nigeria's pressing security challenges. "I will not be president, and somebody will kidnap our children; we will enter the bush together," he declared, highlighting his determination to take direct action against criminal elements.
In addition to his security pledge, Obi outlined a series of emergency measures he plans to implement upon taking office. He expressed his intention to declare states of emergency in three key areas: corruption, education, and electricity generation. "As president of Nigeria, we will put an emergency on corruption. People must stop stealing public money. Public money must be used for public good," he stated, underlining the need for accountability in governance.
Obi also addressed the dire situation in Nigeria, pointing to widespread hunger, youth unemployment, and ongoing insecurity as indicators of a government that has failed its citizens. He urged the current president to actively engage with the populace, saying, "Your president said he will not be able to campaign all over Nigeria. Please, do not listen to him. He must come and campaign all over Nigeria."
The NDC candidate further stressed the importance of education and healthcare, promising to ensure that every child has access to schooling and that primary healthcare services are available in every ward across the nation. He committed to transparency regarding government borrowing, assuring citizens that they would be informed about the purpose of any loans taken by his administration.
In a bid to garner support beyond ethnic lines, Obi appealed to voters to consider his qualifications rather than his Igbo identity. "Don't vote for me, because I'm an Igbo man. Please, I'm asking for your vote because I'm the most qualified to be president of Nigeria," he urged.
Obi was confirmed as the NDC's presidential candidate for the upcoming elections on May 29, 2026, after resigning from the African Democratic Congress earlier that month. His campaign also includes ambitious economic goals, with NDC chieftain Pat Utomi stating that Obi aims to stabilize the naira at an exchange rate of N500 to the dollar, a move intended to alleviate inflation and improve the economic conditions for Nigerians.
As the 2027 elections approach, Obi's proposals and pledges are set to resonate with voters who are increasingly concerned about security, governance, and economic stability in Nigeria.
