Rhema Christian Church advocates for non-partisan stance ahead of 2027 elections
Archbishop Taiwo Akinola emphasizes the church's role in promoting justice and good governance.

As Nigeria gears up for the 2027 general elections, the Rhema Christian Church and Towers has called on churches across the nation to maintain a non-partisan position. This appeal was made by Archbishop Taiwo Akinola during a press briefing at the Champion Peace Cathedral in Sango-Ota, Ogun State.
Archbishop Akinola emphasized that the primary role of the church is to educate the consciences of its members and promote justice, truth, and good governance, rather than to endorse political candidates or dictate electoral choices. He stated, "The Church must remain non-partisan but never indifferent to justice, truth and good governance. We must educate consciences rather than dictate political choices."
The Archbishop's remarks come at a time when the political landscape in Nigeria is increasingly polarized, and he urged the church to be a beacon of integrity and moral guidance during the electoral process. He highlighted that the effectiveness of political leadership should be measured by the tangible improvements in the lives of citizens, rather than the promises made during campaigns.
In his address, Akinola also called for peaceful and credible elections, urging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, political parties, candidates, and civil society organizations to collaborate in ensuring a transparent electoral process. He expressed concern over issues such as vote-buying, intimidation, and electoral violence, which have marred past elections, and stressed the importance of combating misinformation and religious manipulation.
The Archbishop further encouraged both young people and senior citizens to ensure they complete their voter registration and collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) in preparation for the upcoming elections. He noted the critical role that an informed and engaged electorate plays in shaping the future of the nation.
Addressing broader societal issues, Akinola called on the government to tackle pressing challenges such as drug abuse, rising living costs, healthcare deficits, and youth unemployment. He expressed particular concern for the youth, stating, "Nigeria must not abandon a generation whose creativity, strength and potential are indispensable to national development."
As the country approaches the elections, the Rhema Christian Church's stance underscores the vital role religious institutions can play in fostering civic responsibility and promoting ethical governance in Nigeria.
