Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has firmly denied allegations that the Russian government was behind the display of Russian flags during the recent #EndBadGovernance protests in Nigeria. Speaking in Moscow on the sidelines of the Third Russia-Africa Summit, Lavrov emphasized that the actions of the protesters were not indicative of official Russian support.

The protests, which spanned from August 1 to August 10, 2024, were primarily driven by widespread discontent over the rising cost of living and economic hardships faced by Nigerians. During these demonstrations, groups of youths in cities such as Kano, Kaduna, Zamfara, and Abuja were observed waving Russian flags and calling for military intervention, a move that the Nigerian government condemned as treasonous and a threat to national sovereignty.

Lavrov clarified that individuals who displayed the flags did so in their personal capacity, stating, "Anyone who donned the Russian flag, did so in his or her personal capacity. It does not mean that Russia was in support of this kind of action." He drew a parallel to citizens who show solidarity with other nations, such as Palestinians, without implying governmental backing.

The Russian Embassy in Abuja had previously distanced itself from the protests, reiterating that it did not endorse the actions of the protesters. Lavrov highlighted the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and Russia, which dates back to the Soviet era, noting that this partnership has led to increased educational opportunities for Nigerians, with scholarships reaching a peak of 220 in 2026.

He also recalled a productive meeting with his Nigerian counterpart in Abuja in 2024, which further solidified the bilateral ties between the two nations. In addition to addressing the protests, Lavrov commented on Russia's defense pacts in the Sahel region, asserting that Moscow is committed to combating security threats while accusing Western nations of using mercenaries to destabilize the area.

Furthermore, Lavrov discussed a recent diesel supply agreement with the United States, describing it as a purely business-oriented decision that would not undermine Russia's alliances. He stated, "The diesel agreement with the U.S. is purely a business decision by two world leaders who are concerned by the rising cost of energy."

The protests and the subsequent reactions from both the Russian government and the Nigerian authorities highlight the complexities of international relations and domestic unrest, as citizens express their frustrations amid challenging economic conditions.
