Seven killed in Ukraine as Russian strikes follow US envoy's meeting with Putin
Recent Russian strikes in Ukraine resulted in seven fatalities, coinciding with US diplomatic efforts.

Russian military actions in Ukraine have intensified, resulting in the deaths of seven individuals following a meeting between a US envoy and President Vladimir Putin. This escalation occurred shortly after US President Donald Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff, held discussions with Putin in Saint Petersburg, aimed at addressing the ongoing conflict between the two nations.
The attacks on Thursday saw casualties across various Ukrainian regions. Reports indicate that one man was killed in Sumy and a woman in Kharkiv, both located in the northeast. Additionally, three fatalities were reported in Zaporizhzhia, and two in the eastern Donetsk region. In the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced that airstrikes had resulted in injuries to 15 people and significant damage to metro infrastructure, particularly at the Pivdenny Bridge, which has disrupted traffic in the city.
The overnight strikes came despite an optimistic tone from Trump, who suggested that the US is closer than ever to a resolution of the conflict. Witkoff's meeting with Putin followed his earlier discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Oslo, aimed at bridging gaps between the two leaders. Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, participated in the talks remotely, indicating a high level of US involvement in the diplomatic efforts.
Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov stated that Russia is "in principle ready to resume" trilateral talks involving the US and Ukraine, tentatively scheduled for mid-November, after the US midterm elections. The discussions are expected to focus on post-war security arrangements. Zelensky has expressed support for the resumption of these talks, highlighting the importance of diplomatic engagement amid ongoing hostilities.
Despite the diplomatic overtures, the violence has not subsided. Moscow's mayor reported that two individuals were injured due to drone attacks, with a total of 630 drones launched towards the region. Russian air defenses reportedly intercepted 70 of these drones. The situation remains precarious, with Ukraine's air force issuing warnings of incoming ballistic missiles aimed at Kyiv, urging residents to seek shelter.
Witkoff characterized his discussions with Putin as "constructive," while acknowledging that significant work remains to be done. He also expressed gratitude for Putin's decision to release Stephen Hubbard, a US citizen detained in Russia, which Trump defended as a necessary step to secure humanitarian outcomes. This complex interplay of military action and diplomatic effort underscores the challenges facing both nations as they navigate this protracted conflict, which has claimed tens of thousands of lives since Russia's invasion in February 2022.
As the situation evolves, the international community watches closely, hoping for a breakthrough that could lead to peace in a region that has endured Europe's most severe conflict since World War II.
