Nigerians are bracing for another potential increase in petrol prices as Brent crude oil prices soared to $115.18 per barrel, raising concerns among consumers and businesses alike. The surge in crude prices is attributed to escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which have sparked fears of supply disruptions.

Currently, Dangote Petroleum Refinery and other depot owners are selling Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, at ₦1,350 per litre. However, experts warn that the continued rise in crude oil prices could compel these operators to adjust their prices further. This comes after a previous increase from ₦1,265 to ₦1,350 per litre on September 12, as reported by Punch.

The price of Brent crude has climbed by 1.8% recently, marking its highest level in five months. The United States West Texas Intermediate benchmark also saw an increase of 2%, reaching $101.56 per barrel. The geopolitical climate, particularly tensions involving the United States and Iran, has contributed significantly to this rise. Reports of attacks by Iran-backed Houthi militants on energy facilities in Saudi Arabia have further exacerbated concerns over global oil supply stability.

Market analysts are closely monitoring the situation, as the potential for renewed military action in the region could disrupt oil production and international shipping routes. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical corridor for oil trade, remains a focal point of these tensions, with any disruptions likely to escalate shipping and insurance costs.

For Nigeria, the implications of rising crude prices are significant. If refiners and importers adjust their prices in response to increased procurement costs, consumers may face higher petrol prices at the pump. This could lead to a ripple effect, driving up transportation costs and food distribution expenses, which are already burdensome for many households.

The Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN) recently reported that the estimated petrol import parity price rose to ₦1,253.40 per litre on October 19, up from ₦1,246.36 just three days earlier. This increase of ₦7.04, or 0.56%, highlights the growing pressure on petrol prices amid fluctuating global oil markets.

As the situation develops, both consumers and businesses will be watching closely to see if Dangote Refinery and other operators will announce any price adjustments. The uncertainty surrounding crude oil prices and the potential for further increases pose a significant challenge for Nigerians already grappling with high energy costs and inflationary pressures.
